Sports Massage is a type of Swedish massage that stimulates the circulation of blood and lymph fluids.
Some sports massage techniques also incorporate Trigger Point Therapy to break down adhesions (Knots in the muscles) and increase a persons range of motion (ROM).
There are 4 types of Sports Massage:
• Pre-event sports massage – a sport stimulating massage 15-45 minutes before a sports event, it is directed to parts of the body that will be involved in exertion.
• Post event sports massage – this is given within an hour or two after the event to help bring body tissue back to normality.
• Restorative sports massage – this is given during training to allow the individual to train harder with less likelihood of injury.
• Rehabilitative sports massage – this is aimed at alleviating pain due to injury and returning the body to a state of normal good health.
Over the past 15 years of being a massage practitioner I have treated many sports people from areas of Basketball, Rugby Union and Touch Football in the above parameters of sports massage and have had very good results and positive feedback.
